Raw Data Dreams

This Mapbox style is called Raw Data Dreams.
It was created as an assignment for Geography 572: Graphic Design in Cartography at UW-Madison. We were asked to recreate the aesthetic elements of a piece of art as a slippy webmap.

Raw Data Feel by Everything Everything. All of the images surrounding the release, the song titles, and some of the lyrics were procedurally generated.

Since I learned about AI generated images, I have been fascinated with the idea of making maps that capture the same feeling and aesthetic.

I think AI generated maps are an interesting jumping off point from which to explore new aesthetic spaces in cartography. For example, the image on the homepage of this website was created using Dream Studio.

Madison, WI

I'm drawn to the surreal dream-like quality of these images. The bold technical feeling layout that houses the images reminds you of the technology behind them. A binary box building impossible worlds.

Battery Park, NYC

I love all five color palettes, so to try to capture that dream-like feeling I decided to blend the color palettes into eachother as the user moves between zoom levels. The map contains five distinct aesthetics that all share consistent elements.

Beijing, China

AI in art is a somewhat controversial topic, but one that I think has powerful implications and potential for aesthetics in cartography. This is a first pass at playing with the aesthetics of AI in maps. I hope to pull this thread more and see what unravels from it.

Explore the map and play with the zoom for the full effect.
